JOY IS A FORM OF RESISTANCE

wordshelter1

Text installation for the Word Shelter, 2025.

The Word Shelter is a vestaboard composed of mahogany, copper, and glass built by Shaun Bullens for the Dirt Palace in Providence, Rhode Island.

I composed a cycle of micro poems for the vestaboard titled "JOY IS A FORM OF RESISTANCE."

The poems explore spring renewal, equinoxing, tender greening, sudden snow, wild tides, and swirling wind. They contemplate the interconnectedness of beings and play in the space between promise and disintegration, between hope and uncertainty. The poems cycle every 30 minutes (as the sun allows; the vestaboard is solar-powered) and build into a blooming narrative.

Above all, the poems act as reminders that within shifting landscapes that easily slide toward despair,

joy is a form of resistance.
